2. Installation
- Assemble the stand before mounting the printer body. Two people minimum — the body is awkward rather than heavy, and a slip damages the media path.
- Remove every orange transport lock, including the two inside the roll compartment. Missing one of these is the usual cause of a first-day media jam.
- Insert the printheads before the ink cartridges, then let the initialisation routine finish. It takes about twenty minutes and must not be interrupted.
- Load the roll with the leading edge cut square. A ragged or angled edge is the single most common cause of skew.
- Print the internal configuration plot and keep it — it records the printhead alignment state at commissioning.
3. Drivers and integration
- For CAD work install the HP-GL/2 driver rather than the generic one: line weights, pen tables and long-plot handling all depend on it.
- Add the plotter by static IP as a Standard TCP/IP port. Discovery-based queues break as soon as the address changes, and a broken plot queue is usually noticed at the worst moment.
- Set the media profile to match the roll actually loaded. Printing photo settings onto bond paper floods the sheet and cockles it.
4. Maintenance schedule
Intervals assume normal duty. Dusty warehouses and continuous shifts need the shorter end of every range.
| Weekly | Wipe the platen and the cutter track. Paper dust builds there and drags on the media. |
|---|---|
| Monthly | Run the printhead check plot. Nozzle-out shows as a missing line in the pattern long before it shows in a drawing. |
| Every roll change | Check the leading edge is cut square and the spindle end caps are fully seated. |
| Yearly | Replace the maintenance cartridge and inspect the drive belt tension — a slipping belt shows up as banding at regular intervals. |
5. Common faults
Lines drift or the plot is skewed
Media loaded off-square or the roll is not seated on the spindle. Reload with a square-cut edge before touching any calibration.
Banding at even intervals
Run printhead alignment first. If it persists at the same pitch, the drive roller or belt needs a technician.
Colour differs from the screen
The plotter is calibrated for its own media profiles. Match the loaded media in the driver, then run colour calibration from the front panel.
Cutter leaves a ragged edge
Blade wear or adhesive residue from label stock. Clean the track first; the blade is a serviceable part.
Job sits in the queue and never prints
Almost always a mismatch between the requested media size and the loaded roll. The panel shows the expected size, not an error.
